Swords homes from Penneys
Irish Independent, Friday 24th of September

Penneys, the fashion store chain, has got the green light for its new apartment development at Main Street in Swords, Co. Dublin. The €50m development will include 12 shops and 123 apartments on the former Superquinn site it bought last year for less than the €12m asking price.

This will be the first time that Penneys has included new homes in their property developments.

Through an associate company Sizzles International Ltd, it plans to demolish the existing buildings and provide an anchor Penneys store of about 6,000m2 with the remainder of the retail space comprising 11 single storey retail units.

While approving the overall scheme, An Bord Pleanala insisted that three apartments, at first-floor level podium level in the original plans, be removed in order to increase the adjoining public, open space area.

Located between the Pavillions and the Main Street, the project will also accommodate 441 cars in a basement car park.

The development company, Sizzles International Ltd, of which the directors are Patrick Prior and Arthur Ryan, is a subsidiary of Associated British Foods which is headed by the Weston Family. Anthony Reddy Associates are the architects.

In 1999 the Superquinn deal with the Pavilions developers Flynn and O’Flaherty included land on the Malahide Road side of the site which enabled access from that road. The deal also provided Pavillions’ customers with access off the Main Street through the site that is now in Penneys’ ownership.
