Architecten Berlin Cup, September 1st 2007
For the third consecutive year Anthony Reddy Associates participated in the Architecten Berlin Cup, a day long football blitz tournament for German architect practices which over the years has taken on an international flavour with the participation of teams from the UK (Foster & Partners), Ireland (ARA) and Switzerland (Herzog & De Meuron).
As holders of the cup for the last two years ARA travelled with high hopes of retaining the title for an unprecedented third year in a row.
Drawn in a competitive looking group along with GMP architects, Modulor & Struhk Architekten, Gruentuch Ernst + Heide v. Beckerath Albers, Herzog & De Meuron & eventual winners Weinmiller / Mueller Reimann, ARA emerged as group winners with a record of 4 wins and a draw.
As group winners ARA were paired in the semi finals with old adversaries Foster & Partners, themselves former champions and losing finalists on the occasion of ARA’s first victory 2005. With no score after regulation time the game went into extra time and eventually penalty kicks. ARA reached the final for the third time in as many years only after the teams were still level after 3 penalties each and ARA prevailed in sudden death penalties.
Weinmiller / Mueller Reimann were to be the opponents in the final, and again the teams couldn’t be separated after regulation time. To their credit WMR regrouped for extra time and scored with a classic counter attack to the delight of the partisan crowd. ARA redoubled their efforts for an equaliser but with the clock against them the dream of a 3 in a row died with the referees whistle.
It was fitting that Tony Reddy, part of the travelling ARA support, presented the trophy to the scorer of the winning goal, Jonas of WMR.
