St. Joseph's Mansions was built in 1939 by Dublin Corporation
in the North Inner City and consisted originally of 138 apartments arranged
around a central courtyard.
Because of the previous good community spirit amongst former residents
and the architectural character of the building, it was decided to retain
the shell of the building and to upgrade the accommodation.
The renovation involves a reduction in the number of apartments to 106
together with enclosing the former access decks, providing lifts and generally
upgrading the accommodation and building fabric.
A section of the apartments have been designed for sheltered housing and
approximately half of these are suitable for wheelchair users.
A community centre, offices for the Cluìd Housing Association,
shops and workshops also formed part of the project.
The project was formally opened by the Taoiseach, Mr Bertie Ahern, and
renamed Killarney Court.
The project was awarded the Inaugural Community Housing Award
in September 2003. This award ‘promotes excellence in design for
social housing and link community development and housing management to
the built environment’.
