Office Development
Decentralised Government Offices, Kilkenny (Phase l)

The building consists of 6,000m² of office space housing seven Government departments. The site is located on the north-eastern boundary of the city.

The architectural solution to the brief is a courtyard type building which accommodated the various departments on three levels around a central sculptured garden.

The concept of a courtyard building was developed as 2 intersecting 'L' shaped blocks, the functions of which formed the entrance points to the building and set up a natural route through the courtyard from front formal entrance to rear staff entrance and carpark.

The central courtyard provides a place of tranquillity at the heart of the offices. The garden uses indigenous plants to achieve a peaceful oasis to counteract the rigid discipline of the building itself.

The elevational treatment consists of aluminium windows set in a rendered wall in an ordered and well proportioned manner. The base of the building consists of rusticated floor as a reference to the public nature of the building.

Reconstituted stone cills and string courses are used to define the base of the building, and a dark gray tile with a wide roof overhang complete the elevation, and all finishes have been chosen to be maintenance free.
